This past Thursday, RIOT attended it's 11th FAMEfest event and we must say, it was one of the most fun events we've taken part in thus far! The theme this month was "Dog Days of Summer" and celebrated everything doggie from dog products, art and merchandise, dog rescues, and even doggie dating! Chris Carr, one of RIOT's founding partner's brought along his four-legged friend, Lupe, to partake in the festivities. Lupe loved sporting her RIOT bandana which drew large crowds to the RIOT booth. Thanks to our mascot, we had a successful evening raising money for next year's student scholarship recipient. If you have not yet checked out a FAMEfest event, you are missing out! They take place on the first Thursday of every month so mark your calendars now! Summer is here so attend a FAMEfest event to get discounted RIOT gear!

The RIOT team was at Long Beach Funk Fest this past weekend where we raised nearly $400 for our Student Scholarship Program! Thanks to eveyone who came out and supported the cause! Becuase of your generous support, we are one step closer to helping students from Simon Tech Academy reach their dream of being the first in their family to attend college!
This past weekend, RIOT shot the first of a series of photo shoots which will take place on local college campuses. The first college campus we selected to kick off this series was California State University Long Beach. The RIOT team was accompanied by friends, family, colleagues, and students, all of whom made this a very fun experience. Over the summer, we will select three more campuses to take photos at. The purpose of this project is to collect new media for our website that we will be rebuilding this summer! Needless to say, the RIOT team will be busy during our summer break in order to fund more teacher grants, offer more social justice curriculum, and help get more students for low-income communities into college. We will be posting more photos soon.
Last week, RIOT participated in SportieLA's inaugural FAMEfest event. This event will be held on the first Thursday of every month, known as Melrose Night, and is centered around food, art, music, and entertainment.
Rebel Intelligently Overthrow Tactically, set up shop to spread the word of our mission and to help raise money for this month's teacher's grant project. We had a great time meeting new people, listening to great music, and devouring amazing food!
The next FAMEfest event will be held on March 7th, 2013. If you are looking for something to do that night, we definitely encourage you to check out the event and drop by our booth to say what's up!

On Friday, December 9th, members of the RIOT team visited the Dance Team at Handy Elementary School to hand deliver 35 custom designed t-shirts. The students had no idea that their dance coach, Jenny Edminston, applied for, and was awarded a teacher grant that funded the purchase of the shirts.
The discipline and dedication that Jenny described her students to have in her grant application was apparent upon our arrival. Because the school did not have an auditorium, they conducted their rehearsal on the playground with dozens of kids playing and causing distractions. This environment did not detour these kids from learning the steps required to perform the dance routine. After only 30 minutes of watching them practice, it was clear that these students were quick learners and dedicated to making their performance the best holiday dance recital in Handy Elementary School history!
After a quick water break, Jenny introduced the RIOT team. We congratulated the dance team on all the hard work they've done and informed them of the grant that their coach was awarded. The team got excited and wanted to open the box to see the shirts they would be wearing during their performance. We asked for two volunteers to open the box and all hands went up followed by, "oh me! pick me!". Jenny chose two students who opened the box, pulled out a shirt, and showed it to their teammates. All the students smiled from ear to ear and were eager to try them on. Their excitement was contagious and we were happy and humbled to be a part of it.
Please check out the pictures! Their faces tell a better story than the previous words can describe.
We are educators, activists, and friends. We believe that all students should have access to an excellent education and our responsibility is to make sure they do.
